The Wedding Guest Scent Guide: Beautifully Present, Never the Story

Dressing for someone else's wedding runs on one rule: be beautifully present, never the story. If you're the one in white, that's a different brief entirely — the bridal guide covers it. This guide is for the rest of us: the huggers, the criers, the table-eight conversationalists who want to smell wonderful at close range and stay entirely out of the vows.

01

The guest brief, in three rules

A wedding is a close-quarters event dressed up as a spacious one. You will be photographed mid-hug, pressed into a receiving line, and seated through a long indoor dinner beside people you've never met. Your fragrance has to be lovely at exactly that distance — and quiet beyond it. One honest note before the rules: Fragrance Index mood palettes and longevity/sillage bands are engine-derived from each fragrance's composition — note-material physics, not lab tests or wear panels.

  • Mind the sillage band. Our bands run intimate, moderate, strong, enormous. A guest can wear anything from intimate through strong. Enormous is someone else's aisle.
  • The one-spray-less rule. However many sprays you'd wear on an ordinary night out, subtract one. A ceremony is a terrible place to discover your projection ceiling.
  • Flatter the hug, not the entrance. When two scents tie, take the one that smells better at eight inches.
02

Pick by the wedding, not the dress code

Garden ceremony. Outdoor light, actual flowers, daytime manners. Aqua Allegoria Florabloom is garden-ceremony perfect — our Elegant palette, moderate longevity, moderate sillage, nothing to apologize for. Amazing Grace Ballet Rose is the clean rose that reads friendly from every direction; it's long-lasting on a strong band, so let the one-spray-less rule earn its keep.

City hall. Small room, short ceremony, long lunch after. Above The Clouds is the budget seat at the table — Romantic palette, moderate on both bands, impeccable in an elevator. For the fashion-forward guest, Bracken Woman is the interesting choice: Romantic, long-lasting, strong-banded, and the kind of name people ask about over lunch. One spray. Trust it.

Black-tie evening. Low light, real silverware, hours at the same table. Apollonia is the luxe row — Romantic, long-lasting, strong — the thing you wear with the good earrings. Amber Oud White Edition brings warmth to an evening reception on a moderate sillage band, which is exactly right when you're seated eighteen inches from a stranger's plate.

Destination heat. Warm air turns the volume up on everything you wear. Aire Sutileza — the name means "subtlety" — is airy and refined, long-lasting on a strong band the sun will amplify, so keep it to a single spray. Amor Amor is the cheerful classic for the wedding that's half ceremony, half vacation: long-lasting, banded strong-to-moderate.

03

The one to save

10 Corso Como EdP sits in our Elegant palette and is genuinely gorgeous. It also carries beast_mode longevity and an enormous sillage band — it will attend the ceremony harder than you do. That isn't a flaw; it's a scheduling problem. Wear it on a night when you're the headline. At someone else's wedding, leave it on the tray.

04

The real sillage test

Forget the bands for a second. The check that matters is the couple's thank-you hug at the end of the night: when the bride pulls you in and says she's glad you came, she should catch something soft and lovely at exactly hug distance — a good memory, not a weather system. Pass that test and you dressed correctly.

Every scent here lives in the Fragrance Index catalog with its full mood palette and performance bands, alongside the rest of the collection. If none of these matches your seat at the table, browse the catalog and find the one that does — one spray less, ready for the hug.
