Community Guidelines & Review Moderation
Last updated: July 2026 · v3
What community reviews are
Fragrance Index community reviews are first-hand opinions written by real, signed-in members of our community. They are our own moderated content — not scraped from other platforms — and they sit alongside a fragrance’s scent profile and market signals to help people decide.
Reviews reflect the personal experience of the person who wrote them. They are not statements by the brand, and they are not a scientific or laboratory assessment.
Who can contribute
You need a free Fragrance Index account to post. Your chosen display name is shown with your review; your email is never shown publicly and is not sold. Post as yourself — no impersonation of another person, brand, or Fragrance Index.
What we welcome
Honest, first-hand opinions — positive and negative alike. The most useful reviews:
- Describe your own experience with the fragrance (how it smells, wears, or compares)
- Are specific and fair — a critical review is welcome when it is honest
- Stay on topic (about the fragrance or brand on the page)
We do not remove a review just because it is negative. Honest criticism is protected and stays up (U.S. Consumer Review Fairness Act; FTC 16 CFR Part 465).
What is not allowed
Reviews are held from publication (or removed) if they contain:
- Profanity, slurs, hate speech, or sexually explicit content
- Harassment, threats, or personal attacks on any individual
- Spam, advertising, referral/affiliate links, or repeated/duplicate posts
- Off-topic content unrelated to the fragrance or brand
- Private or identifying information about yourself or others (doxxing)
- Impersonation, or reviews you were paid or incentivized to write without disclosure
- Fake or dishonest reviews, or content that is illegal or infringes others' rights
How moderation works
When you submit a review, an automated check runs first. Reviews that are clean are published right away — including critical ones. Reviews flagged for the reasons above are not published automatically; they are held for a human operator to review.
Our operators can publish a held review, keep it down, or remove a published review that breaks these guidelines. Moderation targets abuse, spam, and unlawful content — never the opinion itself. Actions are logged internally for accountability.
Editing, removing & reporting
You can edit or delete your own review at any time. To exercise your data rights, see Data Rights or Data Deletion.
To report a review you believe breaks these guidelines, contact [email protected] with a link to the review. Repeated or serious violations may lead to account action.
Legal
Posting a review means you agree to our Terms of Use (including the community-content terms) and Privacy Policy. You keep ownership of what you write and grant Fragrance Index a license to display it as part of the service. These guidelines are interim and should be reviewed by a licensed attorney before paid commercial launch.
