Myrrh
A dark, bitter-sweet resin — medicinal, smoky and ancient. Frankincense's brooding sister.
Bled as a reddish gum from the Commiphora tree across the Horn of Africa and Arabia, myrrh smells of cool earth, mushroom, balsam and old churches. A base-note fixative with millennia of ritual behind it, it grounds orientals and incense compositions in a melancholic, almost mournful warmth.
